Lawn aeration is a natural process of air exchange between the soil and the surrounding environment. When this does not happen naturally, then we do it with practical implications. Practically, lawn aeration is the process of instinctively removing small plugs of soil from the lawn to improve or ease down the process and let the air pass through the soil. It is also referred to as soil cultivation, soil spiking or soil slicing. This is a proof of the fact that oxygen is essential for the grass to grow and to help the photosynthesis process. Lawn aeration enables the lawn to even survive in extreme conditions.
Benefits of aeration:
The best season for aeration is prior to seeding in the fall. Heavily used lawn, grown on heavy clay and subsoil may require an aeration in the spring and fall.
Aerating machines can be expensive, but renting an aerating machine is a cheaper alternative. There are many types of aerators. There are tractor pulled aerators, walk on aerators, and walk behind aerators. There are also shoe aerators which aren't as effective.
Once you have aerated, you should apply Turf Trust Fertilizer and Black Beauty Grass Seed.
